Coal Authority permissions

Consent is required before carrying out any site works to physically investigate, secure and stabilise past coal mine workings, including mine shafts and other entries to coal mines, owned by the Coal Authority.

You must apply before the investigation and any treatment works take place. This can be before or following submission of a planning application and associated coal mining risk assessment. It can also be before discharging a planning condition relating to site stability or contamination.

You can apply for a permission by email to permissions@coal.gov.uk

Approval typically takes within five to 20 working days.
