Basements

Basements are generally considered a sustainable way to build, most notably because they allow for the optimisation of available space. Building downwards is also a great way to add to the value of your property.

Since they are underground, basements generally tend to allow for more stable year-round temperature maintenance, which in turn helps for energy-saving.  

Considerations which could help you to build or convert a basement in a sustainable way may include: 

• Utilising natural light – using skylights and well-placed windows where possible can allow for energy saving. 
• Insulation – ensuring the space is correctly insulated will also allow for energy-saving year-round. 
• Using sustainable building materials – consider using reclaimed, locally sourced materials where possible, and look for certifications such as Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)² certification for wood, to ensure the sustainability of your building materials. 

It’s worth considering using renewable energy to power your project. Consider incorporating renewable energy sources such as solar panels to generate electricity as well as using energy-efficient lighting, such as LED bulbs. 

It’s also important to ensure that all wastage associated with the project is recycled and/or reused where possible.
