Protected sites are designated through The Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017¹ and are broken down into different classifications. Protected sites include: 

Internationally or European protected sites 

• Special Protection Areas (SPAs) 
• Special areas of conservation (SACs) 
• Ramsar Wetland 

Nationally protected sites 

• Site of Special Scientific Interest 
• Marine Conservation Zone 

Locally protected sites 

• Nature reserves 
• Landscape scale designations (National Parks, Area of Natural Beauty)
