What is the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) and will I have to pay it?

The Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) is a planning charge, introduced by the Planning Act 2008. It came into force on 6 April 2010 through the Community Infrastructure Levy Regulations 2010.

Development may be liable for a charge under the CIL if your local planning authority (LPA) has chosen to set a charge in its area.

Where a LPA charges CIL, the CIL Additional Information form must be submitted with the relevant application. Depending on whether the LPA has enabled the online form, this information may either be completed as part of the online applications questions, or it will be listed as a separate mandatory document which must be submitted alongside any relevant application.
