Converting a basement
Turning an existing unused basement into a habitable space is becoming an increasingly popular approach to home expansion. Particularly in urban areas where there is often little scope to extend outwards so homeowners are choosing to make use of the space below ground level.
Converting an unused basement will usually require waterproofing and often additional ventilation will need to be added.
If there isn’t already, electrics and heating will need to be installed and possibly plumbing; depending on the use of the space.
Adding a basement to a property
It is possible to add a basement below a building, of course this will need specialist knowledge and construction to dig under and secure a building - but it can be done.
The planning regime covering the creation of living space in basements is evolving and under review.
