Summary

Approved Document J provides guidance on the safe installation and usage of heat producing appliances, including boilers, chimneys and flues, and offers advice on safe fuel storage installations, including solid fuel, liquid oil fuels, and gas-fired heating. 

It outlines safe construction and procedures in the adequate provision of air, the detection of carbon monoxide and suitable warning systems, protection against pollution by managing hazards and sources appropriately, and the control and ventilation of combustion by-products e.g. smoke.

Previous version

This is the current edition of Approved Document J - Combustion appliances and fuel storage systems. It supersedes the original 2010 edition (see archived version below) by incorporating the changes made as a result of the Building Regulations 2010 and Building (Approved Inspectors etc) Regulations 2010 and further amendments in 2013.

Changes in this version

This current edition of Approved Document J (Combustion appliances and fuel storage systems), has been updated and replaces all previous editions.

This Approved Document gives guidance for compliance with the Building Regulations for building work carried out in England. It also applies to building work carried out on excepted energy buildings in Wales as defined in the Welsh Ministers (Transfer of Functions) (No. 2) Order 20094.
