Making an appeal

How long does it take to determine an appeal?

Appeals can take a long time, especially if the informal hearing or inquiry procedure is being followed.

Based on the Planning Inspectorate's data this is the average time taken to determine the common types of appeal:

  • Householder appeals take seven weeks on average to be decided
  • Planning appeals take on average between 19 and 38 weeks to determine, depending on the procedure

However, please note that the Planning Inspectorate is currently reporting an additional six-week delay in handling appeals.

The Planning Inspectorate maintains statistics on its performance, including handling time for deciding appeals.

More information on handling appeals is available from GOV.UK, which is the official home of the Planning Inspectorate.
