Why is there a service charge for submitting some planning applications?

There is a service charge applied to online planning applications that attract a planning fee of over £125, applications with a planning fee below this threshold do not incur the service charge. 

The service charge helps cover the costs of delivering a national standard application and payment service, fund future improvements and maintain the Planning Portal’s suite of resources. Having one universal payment mechanism vastly improves the process of submitting and receiving planning applications for our users, and enables us to invest in developing our service, including: 

• The range of free-to-use  planning guidance
• A dedicated customer support team available 9am – 5pm to support customers
• And, of course, the planning application service itself, including e-enabling further application types and improvements to local validation, amongst many others.

Application bands

Planning Portal application types sit within three bands, reflecting our assessment of their complexity and the level of capability typically required to support them: 

• Band 0 - £0 for eligible application types there is no Planning Portal charge 
• Band 1 - £99 inc VAT for less complex application types 
• Band 2 - £149 inc VAT for application types with more complex requirements and greater platform capabilities. 

The majority of applications received through Planning Portal will either be free or in Band 1.

Ceir tri band o geisiadau ar y Planning Portal, sy'n adlewyrchu ein hasesiad o'u cymhlethdod a'r lefel o allu y mae ei hangen fel arfer i'w cefnogi.

• Band 0 – £0 ar gyfer y mathau cais sy’n gymwys, gan gynnwys eithriadau, gwaith coed a chaniatâd adeilad rhestru.
• Band 1 – £99 yn cynnwys TAW ar gyfer mathau o geisiadau llai cymhleth
• Band 2 – £149 yn cynnwys TAW ar gyfer mathau o geisiadau gyda gofynion mwy cymhleth a gallueddau mwy llwyfan
